My question is, when pruning a tree, growing in a vee shape, which is already established (2 trunks, each 4-6 inches around), is it better to leave it, or cut off the weakest?

There are alot of variables that need to be considered. How high is it to the V? Is one side healthier than the other? Is there a crack or rot present at the V?
As a rule at this size I have found that removing half the tree only promotes rot at the cut site (best to make the cut at an angle away from the tree). But the best advice when thinning a woods or pruning one is to consult your state forester. That is what they are paid for and are ussually very happy to walk your woods with you and give you there thoughts on how to best manage the wood lot.
